Wedding Dress Shopping Tips: How to Make the Most of Your Experience

Shopping for your wedding dress is one of the most exciting parts of wedding planning — but it can also feel overwhelming. Between the pressure to “find the one,” a room full of mirrors, and strong opinions from friends and family, the experience can be emotionally heavy if you’re not prepared.
Here are my best tips to help you walk into your bridal appointments confident, prepared, and ready to enjoy the process.
1. Remember — It’s Not Your Body, It’s the Dress
Bridal gowns are not made to fit most people right off the rack. They’re designed to be altered. If something feels too big, too small, or just “off,” it’s not your body — it’s the sample dress. Don’t let the fit shake your confidence. Focus on the style, fabric, and overall vision, not the zipper that won’t close.
Also — don’t pay attention to the size on the tag. Every designer has their own set of measurements tied to an arbitrary size, and it won’t match your everyday clothing size. Once you fall in love with a dress, your sales associate will take your measurements and recommend a size based on your largest measurement so there’s room to alter it comfortably. This gets the dress close to your shape, and then alterations will make it fit like a glove.
2. Wear What Makes You Feel Your Best
Before you step into a bridal salon, make sure you feel your best physically and emotionally. That might mean getting your hair done, wearing makeup you feel confident in, or simply starting the day with a great breakfast and a deep breath.
The weight of decision-making while looking at yourself in multiple mirrors in dresses that don’t fit perfectly can be draining. When you feel good walking in, the process feels much lighter.
3. Be Intentional About Who You Bring
Friends and family can be incredibly supportive, but too many opinions can make decision-making harder — even when they mean well.
Start small: Bring one or two trusted, calm friends (or go alone) for your first appointment to figure out what you love on your body.
Expand later: Once you’ve narrowed down your favorites, invite the whole entourage for a “finalist” try-on. That way, you’ve already done the hard work before the peanut gallery joins in.
4. Give Yourself Permission to Think About It
Not every bride has the “instant tears, obvious yes” moment. And that’s okay. You might need to sleep on it or take a couple of days before committing. This is a big purchase and an emotional one — it’s perfectly normal to want time to process your decision.
5. Wear the Right Undergarments
Your appointment will go much smoother if you wear the right foundation pieces.
Bra: Choose a flesh-toned convertible strapless bra or a sticky bra for discreet support without showing straps. Avoid sports bras, as they can add bulk and won’t mimic the shape your wedding dress will create.
Underwear: Wear underwear you’re comfortable having someone see — some gowns are sheer in certain areas, and your bridal stylist may be helping you in and out of dresses.
If you’re not comfortable showing that much skin, let your stylist know. They can easily step out while you change and return to zip or clip you in.
6. Protect Your Emotional Energy
Wedding dress shopping should be joyful — but it’s also deeply personal. If you ever feel rushed, pressured, or uncomfortable, it’s okay to slow down, step out, or even book another appointment elsewhere. This is your moment.
Final Thought:The perfect dress isn’t just about how it looks — it’s about how it makes you feel. Walk in knowing your worth, wear what makes you feel confident, and surround yourself with people who want you to shine.
